Thanks to this great initiative by Vasantham to give viewers a golden chance to take ownership of what they prefer to watch.
Mudhal Paarvai- 5 pilot episodes from 5 different drama series.
You like it, you vote for the drama you want and you’ll get to watch the entire story unfold.
It is sort of Netflix’s interactive film Bandersnatch in a way. If that ever have happened to the usual drama on Vasantham, “continue watching” or “switch off and go sleep”, the latter option is what I usually do.
If Shivaji and Nagesh from Thiruvilayadal were Vasantham viewers, the question/answer would be
“What is inseparable?”
“Vasantham drama and affair storylines”
Thank God! This new initiative- mudhal paarvai has no affair storylines (yet. And I hope those dramas don’t fall into the same old trap again)
After watching all 5 episodes, a few things about writing, acting talent and the portrayal of Singapore Indians are evident.
We do have few great Writers. My favourite of all 5 is Aasai (the desire), story by Hayma Malini and Venkataramani and directed by Don Aravind. It is a story about an old couple who is celebrating their wedding anniversary. The man is a marriage councillor and the woman who is also happy with her professional life have led a successful and happy marriage. There are other branch-out stories of their grown up kids and their lives (which didn’t quite interest me. )
But what hooked me to the story is the man announcing to the entire family that he has a bucket list, he has desires and that he wants to divorce and start living his life. And the episode ends there.
For those who have watched the Bengali film “Bela Seshe”, the story line may sound similar. Bela Seshe was written so well that it was kind of a new age family drama where each member of the extended family tried all means to bring them together. The daughters whose lives weren’t going great but they all came together for one mission. In that process, the daughters rediscovered themselves and helped their parents at the same time. It was such a fantastic family drama!
If “Aasai” could pull it off bringing all the juicy flavour in writing our very own “Bela Seshe”, then definitely it is going to be an amazing delight for the viewers.

Avatharam- 2nd fav.
I don’t like murder mystery. (Vasantham cliches are either police story or murder or affair) but I may still watch avatharam. The reason why I may watch it is solely for the talent of director/writer suriavelan. I am a fan of his music videos and he is that young chap, Vasantham needs to bring a new colour to its drama variety. His music videos are quite charming in its own unique ways and his taste for good music is highly evident in his works.
But having said that, I wonder why was there a typical Tamil cinema kind of thanni adikuraan song in the 45-minute episode? Suriavelan, you’re more than this.
One thing for sure that if this drama wins, we have to get ready to watch the magnificent moments of Puravalan and Mathialagan on screen! I wished the conversation between them scene had a single frame positioning them together rather than having cuts in the scene. As a viewer, I would like to see a fierce tiger and the lion king in one frame.
*******
Amaithi padai- Police story(CID I Guess. See, tv has reduced everything to just one occupation), murder mystery.
The first few minutes were quite captivating especially the Officers trying to negotiate with the criminal at a tension-filled spot and all that.
In another scene - the protagonist(jabu) is in his kitchen. The Wife (bharati) comes and hugs him and asks “hey what are u cooking?”
My Mindvoice- hey not bad! Not bad! Very subtle way of showing equality in housework. Nice nice.
Jabu turns back, hugs her tightly, looks at her and slowly recites, “varthai thavari vittai kannama” a Bharatiyar poem.
Omg! Major put off.
Maniratnam has to take full responsibility for this mess.
